IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 1 Review: A Chilling Start to the IT Prequel
IT: Welcome to Derry
Welcome to Derry - Episode 1 (The Pilot) takes a trip back in time to Derry, Maine - a really eerie place to be in 1962 - its a whole lot earlier than the events in Stephen Kings IT. The show pulls off a real trick in capturing the way a small town could feel back in the early '60s - its a mix of feeling all nostalgic but also pure terror.
Story and Setting
The setup in this first episode is pretty straightforward yet still pretty engaging - its laying the groundwork for some serious dark stuff to come. The 1960s setting is recreated down to every last detail - from the clothes the characters are wearing to the way the camera moves - you really feel like you're in the midst of something that feels both super familiar & just plain terrifying.
Horror Moments
There are 2 or 3 real show-stopping scary scenes in this first episode. The car scene was pretty intense - the flickering lamp was freaky enough, and that ending sequence was crazy intense - its classic IT style dread from start to finish. Each one ramps up the tension and suspense perfectly, so you're practically begging for more as the credits roll on Episode 2.
Performances
But really the standouts are the kid actors in this episode - they bring a level of authenticity and emotion that makes you feel like you're watching a bunch of real kids go through this bizarre terrifying stuff. And their chemistry & an air of innocence just means the scares hit all the harder.
Technical Excellence
From the way the camera moves to the way the sound design puts you in the middle of the action, the whole first episode of Welcome to Derry is pretty much flawless technically. The visuals just add to the overall creepiness, while the sound design just amplifies every little unsettling moment - its basically the perfect setup for what promises to be a seriously terrifying series.
Final Verdict
First episode of Welcome to Derry is a real winner. It gets the atmosphere just right, the story moves along pretty well, the kid actors deliver some top notch performances, and there are some seriously chilling horror sequences - it really does a great job of capturing the essence of Stephen Kings universe, while also leaving you totally on the edge of your seat wondering what comes next.
Overall: Good start
