Bugonia Movie Story:

The basic idea is pretty wild from the get-go. A CEO gets kidnapped by these two young guys who are way into conspiracy theories. They truly think she's an alien and try to get her to believe it too. The movie mostly shows what happens during her captivity and where things go from there.

Bugonia Review:

I just watched Bugonia and gotta say, I went in blind. All I knew was Emma Stone was in it, and I loved her in La La Land, so that was enough for me to hit play.

Okay, first off, Jesse Plemons, who plays Teddy, completely blew me away. He plays this messed-up, unstable guy with such intense realism. His acting felt raw, uneasy, and disturbingly real. Definitely the best part of the movie.

The story itself is super straightforward. If you're good at guessing movie endings, you'll probably see where it's going pretty early, and then there isn't a whole lot new happening story-wise. The movie has some patchy pacing, especially after the halfway mark, but it doesn't totally ruin things. The film still moves along without losing its main suspense.

This isn't some deep, complex thriller. It's more of a watch-and-see type of movie. If you just need something to pass the time, it works. The tension builds up nicely at first. You keep wondering: What are these guys up to? How far will they go? Will they hurt her? What's next?

Even when the interrogation scenes start getting a bit silly, they somehow keep you engaged. You don't get bored. You stay curious.

One cool thing the movie does is tap into a very human feeling. Like when two people are about to fight and then suddenly stop, a lot of us feel a little let down, like Aw, I wanted to see what would happen. That's a pretty common reaction. This movie subtly makes you notice that darker curiosity in yourself, without directly pointing it out. In a way, it shows how easily we're drawn to drama, making you think that maybe, deep down, we're all a little messed up.

Bugonia has its issues, it's a bit all over the place, but it's entertaining at times, mostly thanks to the acting and the early suspense.

AAY METER: ★★✭☆☆
